Oscar, you say? As the father of the bride so eliquently put it, Oscar was the bastard basset hound of the couple whose mommy & daddy now made it official. Oscar was adorable sporting his tux and his top hat. We just loved him and the energy of this couple. The family was so open with emotions and cried lots of happy tears which I gladly did with them. Christy and Nick are just so darned lovable that we absolutely had the best time photographing them on July 11, 2009. They are just a perfect couple in every sense of the word. Their marriage and wedding was a beautiful celebration and was held at the Purple Iris in Martinsburg. We can't say enough good things about the beauty of the Purple Iris at Hartwood, both of the house and grounds, but especially of the owners and staff. It is always a pleasure to work there. Along with that, we worked with our favorite officiant gal, Reverand Di Cooper. She's always a pleaure to work with and we enjoy her company in many ways when we are at a wedding. Emily was a beautiful bride! She was fun and the camera loved her! We loved the spirit of Bob & Emily. They coach women's basketball at Shenandoah University and they had the whole team at this wedding. Talk about a great time. My favorite moment was when Emily's sister gave her toast. She pulled out a ukulele and invited her women's basketball team to sing a song they'd written with her. The chorus was Emily Crider married Bob Burner set to a popular tune. It was awesome and hilarious! This was definitely a memorable wedding. We had the best time!

Andrew and Kara were a joy to work with and boy, was I impressed with their first dance. They literally glided across the dance floor! It was obvious they had dance lessons and wowed the crowd. Rachael, the bride, just told me to "have fun" with her wedding photos and boy, did I ever have fun. The location, Duffy's on the Potomac in Hagerstown, MD, provided a perfect backdrop for this modern bride. I was touched by her family and the groom's family. It was just a perfect wedding and a perfect day. Rachael's mom, passed her something old and blue right before the ceremony. It was a little silky fabric that when opened contained a penny. It wasn't just any penny either, it was a penny that had been there for all of the marriages in Rachael's family along with the fabric. She wore it in her shoe just as her mother and all family brides before her had. It was very dear. Her mom said that all of the gal's in their family who wore that at their wedding had marriages that lasted.
We wanted to provide you this sneak peek of Rachael, and have featured some of her pictures on the home page of our web site. She was a gorgeous bride in every sense of the word.

Liz & Danny were another sweet May 2009 couple we photographed. Their wedding and the people in it were wonderful. We particularly liked Uncle Arthur and the car he used to take Liz & Danny to their reception. It was sweet! It was an antique Cadillac with all the bells and whistles...too cool. Liz's aunt & uncle were celebrating 40 years of marriage the same day Liz & Danny got married. The couple thought it would be neat to surprise them with their Pastor (as well as the aunt & uncle's Pastor--same guy) and a renewal of their wedding vows at the reception at the end of the Anniversary Dance. That was really special and the newly married couple and guests enjoyed it. Best wishes Liz & Danny for a long & happy marriage. You are off to a great start!

So you've bought the rights to your photographs, now what?

These days most photographers, including us, either package up or offer separately the rights to your photographs. Since we've been selling a lot of the rights to our photos lately, we thought we'd blog about what we feel is the best way to go about printing and preserving your memories. Most photographers provide you your full resolution jpeg photographs on a storage device with a written copyright release. So, then what? Ott Photography has some recommendations for you. First, once you purchase the storage device, it's yours. Make sure to take great care of your newly purchased photographs. Put them in more than one place. It's great to download them on your computer or computers, but don't stop there! Secure your storage device for safe keeping. We recommend putting it in a safety deposit box or a fire proof safe that is bolted to the floor. You want your memories to last forever, so safeguard them. Also, print out copies of your photographs. We DON'T recommend that you print from home, that just doesn't do professional photographs justice. We also think that going to local 1 hour photos or super centers or pharmacies aren't the best choices either. Uploading on line does two things. One, it gives your photos an extra storage place, further safeguarding them, and it gives you a quality print. For those of you who don't have access to professional labs, one place we recommend is http://www.kodakgallery.com or upload to www.ritzpix.com. We also recommend matte prints over glossy ones. They are easier to see, don't leave smudgy fingerprints as easy and look more professional. If enlarging photos, consider the same thing. Photos these days are also made, according to the paper you choose, to last sometimes as long as 100 years. Of course, storing them in a darker place will help. When framing them, consider putting them behind conservation glass so they do not fade. Particularly if they are in a well lit area of your home.
Whatever you do with your photos, make sure that you have plenty of memories showcased in your home and work place. Loved ones also love to have memories of you around, so make sure to make and frame plenty of copies!

April and Clay's Wedding

I cannot tell you how much Ryan and I enjoyed working with Clay and April. They are the cutest couple and are absolutely perfect for each other. They have such a fun spirit, great family and fabulous friends. Their wedding was both organized and relaxed. We enjoyed photographing and sharing their beautiful day! By the time April & Clay said their vows and we left the church, snow began falling which made the day even more special. Although it was cold, the warmth of the wedding more than made up for it! When we walked into the venue, it was like walking into a Winter Wonderland. The bride's colors were a beautiful teal and white. The decor brought a little of the outside in with tree branches draped in crystals on the dance floor while white square teal vases holding white roses and tulips adorned the tables. Other tables had frosted tree branches, and tables reserved for family which sat in front of the double row head tables contained silver branched crystal trees. It was truly a room fit for our Queen, April and her new husband! When we finally left April and Clay around 10:30 the party was in full swing and we, along with the packed room of guests were having an excellent time. What a great start to a new life together!

Photography Tips for Brides on Your Wedding Day

On your wedding day, you may have a variety of emotions, nervousness, excitement, anticipation, joy, etc. It is so important that you show these emotions to your photographers and feel comfortable with them. Photographers want you to relax and be yourself. Do not worry about impressing or offending them, just be yourself by saying and doing what you would normally do. Let your personality shine! Portraits are best captured when people are relaxed and being themselves.

Take a risk! This is, for most people, an event of a lifetime. You've hired a professional, so take their advice. If they ask you to pose a certain way or tell you something will or won't look good, consider their input when you make decisions. Let them steer you. Remember, in a photograph, a moment of embarrassment is worth a lifetime of joy! However, don't be afraid to tell them what you would like to see either. They can materialize your vision, and welcome your input.

Don't be afraid to step outside in that dress. Some of the very best pictures come from being photographed in natural light. Also consider your venues. Are they well lit? Good light is so important! Always consider the amount and type of light. If indoors, a daytime wedding in a venue with large windows will produce better results than a cavernous, dark hall. Lower ceilings (if white) will enable the photographer to bounce their flash, creating a more diffused natural-looking light. If your wedding will be outdoors, the best light will be early or late in the day. Less flattering is mid-day, and the absolute worst is a mix of sun and shade. When in doubt, consult your photographer before finalizing your venue and time of day.

Be touchy feely! Give hugs, express joy and cuddle up to your groom! Don't hold back any affection if you are hoping for those romantic photos you've seen in magazines. The photographer will have better photo opportunities and much more to work with! Nuzzle each other's neck, touch noses, touch each other on the arm or waist, look into each other's eyes, and take some private moments to "get away" and sneak in a kiss or gaze into each other's eyes. A good photographer will follow you a few of those times at least and get priceless shots. Be aware of the scenery when you do so. Taking a walk outdoors with your photographer can be the best thing you can do for your wedding photos. Dedicating a little bit of outdoor time, weather permitting, to the photographer after the ceremony will pay big dividends when you see your proofs and choose your photographs.

Our Last Wedding of 2008

We photographed the nicest couple on December 20, 2008. Amber Ray and Donny Lindsey were married without a hitch! They had a beautiful wedding, made all the more special by their remembrances. They had the first pew on Donny's side dedicated to the memory of his parents with a nice photo and flowers and did the same for their baby which they lost in June. I was impressed with their strength and their ability to talk with us about it. They are an amazing couple who have already been through a lot and will definitely have a solid marriage, as they already have shown amazing strength and love for each other through the past year. They have built a solid foundation. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of their big day and photograph such a memorable occasion for them. Amber's mom, Kathy, was fantastic as well. She was so much a part of the wedding behind the scenes and it was absolutely well planned, organized and smooth. Our hats are off to her for all of her hard work. Everyone was fun, ready for Christmas and ready to have a great time at the wedding.

This year I don't think we'll make it through the holidays without reminiscing, we never do...but it will be particularly important for us to do so this year. I (Joyce) just lost my paternal grandmother this past June. My grandfather passed away two years prior to her death. Her death was really bittersweet. When you lose someone you love, it is HUGE as we all know. It is more than a little overwhelming, however, to lose again so quickly. That seemed to happen to me a lot this year with my grandma and a friend. Although my grandparents were both in their 90s when they died, they have left a huge hole in my family. It is strange to go home and not have their home, someplace we called home as well, no longer there. Even my kids think so, and how blessed they were to even know great grandparents! So, this year, as you celebrate with your families, remember what's really important. More importantly, remember who is really important in your life. I know my grandparents were important in my life for the better part of 40 years and I wouldn't exchange one memory or one precious second for anything tangible they've left behind. One thing that has been of comfort for me and my family have been photographs. So let this blog serve as a reminder to take lots of pictures this holiday. You won't ever regret one of them, especially as years pass.
On a brighter note, we want to extend our best wishes to our clients, family and friends for the best holiday season yet. Keep what's important, the gift of time with family and friends, at the top of your holiday list. We also want to take this time to say thanks to our clients, family and friends for allowing us the pleasure of being in your lives this year and most of all, for letting us capture moments of your lives in photographs. After our trip to the Pumpkin Patch, we came home and carved our pumpkins. We made a bat pumpkin, a ghost pumpkin, and carved 2 jack-o-lantern faces on our other pumpkins. We are ready for Halloween! Trick or treat!

Dressing for your Portrait Sessions

We are always reading and learning about our craft. We feel that if you are not improving and learning then you are stagnating and that does not fit our style. We came across a great article from Malcome Boone about dressing for your photographs and thought we'd share it with you. Set the mood for your photograph, then give us a call!
"There are many factors that contribute to the success of a portrait. One that is often not given enough consideration is the clothing worn by the subject. Ideally clothing and make-up should compliment skin tone, hair and eye color. If the person is to be the focus of the shot avoid clothing that will distract. Also remember that dark colors tend to make people slimmer than light colors. Generally keep clothing below the waistline darker than the clothing above. When selecting clothing it can be helpful to lay it out to see if anything is too distracting.If you are after a specific mood for the shot, remember you can select warm colors like red and yellow, or cold colors like blues and purples. You may also want to consider the background. White or light colored clothing works best with a 'high-key' white background. Dark clothing works best with a dark background. You can create a bold image using strong contrast, like a yellow dress against a blue background. If photographing a group make sure that everyone is dressed formally or informally. The odd one out will be a distraction. For group photographs try to have similar colors and avoid checks."

My New Bike!

We found the neatest little bike this weekend. It won the Oppenheim Toy of the Year Best Toy Award and I can see why. The amazing thing is that our two year old can navigate it perfectly.

Last night we went to hear the oldest play a concert in his middle school band. It was a great concert! Our oldest is doing so well in band. He plays the trumpet, trombone and baritone. Last night he chose to play baritone. We are SO proud of him! He did a great job. Today he tells me that his baritone is not in "pitch". He can hear that it isn't. I think that's always a wonderful gift when people can hear whether or not something is in pitch. I am so glad he has an ear for music. I always wanted to play the piano, but so far haven't learned. I really like the fact that he is in to music. My littlest loves to hear him play. He went to the concert and sat up and listened the whole time to brother. When he practices he just sits at his feet and listens the entire time. They are so cute together. We always try to take their picture when they do that together. We've included a picture from the concert.

Love Your Wedding Photographer
It’s the day you have been waiting your whole life for.It’s your day to indulge in everything you’ve ever wanted and look your most beautiful. It’s all about you. We get it. But there are certain things you can DO and DON’T to help enhance the relationship you have with your photographer on your big day. While you are the star of your day, we are the director coordinating the whole show, stressing behind the scenes not wanting to miss a single moment, yet keeping a smile on our face to provide you with amazing customer service like you deserve. However, we need you to help us help you. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to help your photographer pull off your day as nothing less than fabulous. 1. DO make photography a priority in your budget. Photography is an investment, and just like any investment, you get what you pay for. If you try to find someone cheap to save a few dollars, more than likely, you will be unhappy with the quality of your photos. Yes, in the digital day and age, anyone can whip out a point and shoot camera, as most of your guests will probably be doing, but true photography is an art and worth the little extra you pay for a rock star wedding photographer who delivers stunning and emotionally rich photos. If need be, pay by credit card and pay it off later. Or sacrifice the extra unnecessary frou frou decoration to pay for a few extra pages in your coffee table album. When your wedding day is over, your photos and album are the only things that remain and last forever. Remember, your grandkids will be looking at these photos one day. You want a photographer who can capture the true emotion of why their grandparents fell in love, not a photographer who can cut you the best deal right now. 2. DON’T just look for a photographer in your market. If you can’t find a photographer you like in your area, don’t settle for one just because they are close by. Most photographers love to travel and shoot destination weddings. Don’t be afraid to pay a little extra in travel fees to be able to hire a photographer who better fits your style. Plus, you are fabulous enough to fly in only the best, right? 3. DO your research, but DON’T compare photographers’ packages. Each photographer offers different packages to best showcase the art we create for you. Just as unique as your photos will be, a photographer’s packages are just as individualized. Photographers can be insulted when you try to insist our competitor offers A, B, and C in their package at X amount of price, and then ask us to do the same. If you want that A, B, and C package at X amount of price, then go with that photographer. We want brides who want us because they connect with our style of photography and appreciate our art, not brides shopping around for the best deal. 4. DON’T ask us to make an exception for you on the price of our packages. We don’t care what budget you have and if our price fits in your budget or not. Would you go into Louis Vitton, find the purse of your dreams, go up to the counter and ask the sales person to give a discount on the purse because it’s not in your budget? No! Please don’t do that to us either. Just because it is a service we provide, doesn’t mean the value is any less than a tangible good. 5. DO hire a wedding planner. While the photographer is responsible for how your day flows visually, a wedding planner is an expert in how to coordinate your day to flow with as less stress as possible. It helps us get the best photos when we can concentrate on simply being the photographer, not the director too. And you shouldn’t be worrying about all the details coming together either. It’s your day to be a princess and catered to, not stressing about if the bows are tied on the seat covers or having to track down the florist because the bouquets were the wrong shade of magenta. A general rule: Something will always go wrong, and these minuscule details are worth the stress you can save for the price you can hire a wedding planner to handle it for you. Photographers like brides who are relaxed, not stressed. Relaxed brides make for more beautiful photos. 6. DON’T plan your ceremony at sunset. A given on any wedding day is that things will always go behind no matter how much you try to plan ahead of time. Yes, sunset lighting is the most gorgeous for outdoor weddings, but set the ceremony time half an hour before in order to actually be walking down the aisle by the time it is actually starting to set. And if you can, start the ceremony an hour before in order to give your photographer enough day light after the ceremony for the required family formal photos that follow. 7. DO see your groom for a First Meet before the ceremony. Yes, it’s traditional to wait for the groom to see you walking down the aisle. And while photographers respect tradition if need be, from our perspective, we prefer you to see your groom beforehand. It will not only help the flow of your day, but also help you get the best photos possible with your groom if you allow time to meet him before the ceremony. Normally, by the time the ceremony is over, you are relieved it is over and ready to party, and it should be your time to relax and mingle with guests and soak in your congratulations. Don’t stress yourself out further by having to further squeeze in your photos with your groom after the formal family photos and before the DJ is ready to announce you. Your guests will be starving and ready for dinner. The more photos you can get out of the way before the ceremony, the more time you have to truly enjoy the experience of your day in the midst of the whirlwind that is swirling around you. 8. DON’T expect your photographer to tell you every which way to pose for your bridal photos and photos with your groom. Yes, your photographer will be happy to suggest poses, but you ultimately know what your best side is and how you feel most flattering. We love when you work it for the camera! The more fluid and into your photos you can be, the better it looks. This is probably the one time in your life you will have professional photos done, so live it up. Bring out your inner supermodel and pretend the photographer is your mirror that you secretly strut in front of when no one is looking. Watch shows like America’s Next Top Model to see what works and doesn’t work. Study fashion magazines to practice poses in front of the mirror before you are in front of the camera. In the shots with your groom, don’t be afraid to show passion with your man! So what if your grandma is a few feet away watching you make out with your new hubby in a few shots. You are in love, celebrate it! The more you can work it for the photographer, the more your photographer will be inspired creatively to provide you the best photos possible. Anyone can take a photo of you and your groom smiling at the camera. Your photographer wants to see the laugh you share, the sweetness in your eyes when you look at each other, the way you snuggle up together, the sassiness of knowing you look hot on your wedding day, the way your groom knows he’s with the hottest girl in the world, etc. 9. DO communicate with your photographer what photos are important for you to have, but DON’T give them a list of pre-planned unnatural photos (i.e.: Mom holding veil of bride and smiling at the camera). As artists who shoot from the heart, not by a list, we would rather capture the natural emotion of your mom crying as she’s putting on your veil, not the posey-stop-and-smile-at-camera-in-between-every-move shot. Especially to true photojournalists who capture the day as it unfolds naturally. If your photographer needs you to stop and smile at the camera, they’ll let you know. Trust me. 10. DON’T forget to feed your photographer. By the time your reception starts, your guests aren’t the only ones starving; we are too! Having been on our feet all day running around like crazy, we need a quick moment to rest and recharge before the party gets started. Please remember to include us in your budget for a regular meal when counting heads for the reception meal. Don’t provide us a lunch boxed “vendor meal”. We aren’t in kindergarten. But we will always save room for dessert, so reward your photographer for a hard day’s work with a piece of cake at the end of the night!

Our First REAL Blog!

Ryan and I are sooo excited. This is our first blog and we finally have found some time to create one. Our hope in creating a blog is to visit it from time to time to keep you up to date on our company's events and to celebrate our successes. We have been extremely fortunate to work with the GREATEST clients in the whole world. We focus a lot on weddings and our brides and grooms have been PHENOMENAL to work with! They have all had beautiful weddings and have had wonderful families. We love taking photographs so it is always a treat for us to be a part of a couple's special day. We don't feel like vendors, we feel like friends. I hope potential clients who read this will take a little time to get to know us and see how fun we are when we take your pictures! We love working together and make a fantastic team. And, yes, we've been a bride and groom and are married to each other. It makes for a wonderful business and a great way to spend some time together doing something we both enjoy.I'm so excited! My first ever blog! I feel like a kid. Anyway, we got to enjoy a breather from working and some fresh air this weekend by going to the park. Check out a few of our pictures of one of our son's just hanging out. Yes, of course we took cameras. Are you kidding me? I think our kids think we take the cameras to bed with us at night. Needless to say, we are not picture poor. Anyone out there into scrapbooking?
